Here are stories from 3 people who have successfully completed the Hyundai Motors’ new internship program, H-Experience.
Last March, Hyundai Motors got rid of their regular entry-level recruitment and implemented regular employment for each job position for the first time ever for a major Korean corporate. They also implemented a new intern system, ‘H-Experience’ program. H-Experience is carried out in two formats; ‘employment transition intern’ where interns are selected, go through field work internship before determining their employment and ‘research intern’, where talents are discovered in competitive areas of the future such as MECA (Mobility, Electrification, Connectivity, Autonomous) and are given work experience. H-Experience’s biggest traits are that the interns are recruited at all times throughout the year and their recruitment scope has been largely widened. The previous application condition ? being a college student who is attending his/her 6th or 7th semester ? has been alleviated as well. You can apply for the employment transition intern if you have graduated or are expecting to graduate whereas the research intern takes on anyone, regardless of their current semester status.
We met with 3 interns who successfully completed the H-Experience program this year. Let’s get details on how their new internship program H-Experience was.
Research experience accumulated through H-Experience, EDITH TFT intern Myeongjin Kim
EDITH TFT research intern Myeongjin Kim
EDITH TFT is a place that researches and develops AI technology necessary for Hyundai·Kia Motors customers to have new experiences. I was a research intern at the Computer Vision part, where you research visual recognition AI.
You need much data to educate AI models. Recently virtual data is used to acquire training data. I conducted research on making models that use virtual data work well with actual data. When I arrived at the office, I summarized and interpreted the result of the model training which had taken place throughout the whole previous night. My main task was to form new ideas and realize it through coding and repeat experiments depending on the result.
I’m currently a graduate school student and have completed 2 semesters; H-Experience did not have an application condition limitation so I could come work as a research intern despite being a graduate school. The field of research at my graduate school is Computer Vision, which is highly related to a work at EDITH TFT. In the AI sector especially, many people hand in their papers through joint research as they take part in corporate internship. I applied for H-Experience without hesitation as I wanted to carry out quality joint research with the Hyundai Motors EDITH TFT’s Computer Vision research team members.
Intern Myeongjin Kim acquired sufficient research experience through H-Experience.
H-Experience’s research intern differs from other internship programs. It’s important to appeal your field of research rather than additional qualifications in the selection process. I tried hard to get most of my Computer Vision field research in my introduction letter as well. In my case, I didn’t get to participate in the work carried out by EDITH TFT. But throughout my intern period, I got much help from the EDITH TFT researchers and carried out my previous area of research. Researchers also suggested new topics to compliment my original research as well. AI research especially requires much hardware resources, so it was great to be provided with sufficient environment.
Also, I never thought much about communicating with others as I carried out my research by myself, but working as Hyundai Motors’ research intern, I got to learn how to communicate efficiently. I will continue on with Computer Vision research in the future. I’m especially interested in applying Computer Vision based AI on vehicle driving situations. With the experience I acquired through H-Experience, I would like to contribute to the mobility sector and create new user experiences.
An experience I could not get from college; Compact Marketing Team 1 intern Soyoung Jang
Compact Marketing Team 1 intern Soyoung Jang
I was an employment transition intern for Compact Marketing Team 1, which is in charge of global marketing for compact level SUV vehicles. Compact Marketing Team 1 establishes and carries out global marketing strategy for new cars based on customer experience values. I did field work and personal assignments simultaneously. For the field work, I participated in meetings for vehicle STP and communication concept and made the competition analysis and PR communication idea proposal for my personal assignments.
I originally dreamt of becoming a marketer. I majored in consumer marketing in college and double majored in management. In college, I did a thorough analysis of consumer lifestyle, and the meaning of ‘mobility’ in people’s everyday lives left a big impression on me. That’s when I decided to start my career in automobile marketing. And in just 5 minutes after researching about Hyundai Motors, I just knew this was the place for me.
Intern Soyoung Jang accumulated various work experiences.
H-Experience is open for recruitment at all times, so I had to check their opening every day and waited for an announcement for a part I wanted to apply for. I had already thought hard about application motivation and my perspective in life, which are common questions for the introduction letter. So, I was able to focus on the idea suggestion question rather than the common questions when the opening was announced. The idea proposal question was about ‘establishing a strategy to provide new customer experience and maximize satisfaction for Gen-Z’; I thought about what I would need and interviewed my Gen-Z friends.
I thoroughly read all the Hyundai Motors related articles published going back a year to prepare for my interview. I chose expected questions and prepared and practiced my answers. And I kept thinking about what would differentiate me from others, because I felt my marketing competition and intern experiences would be on the application of most marketer applicants. So, I accentuated my special experiences. I had taken part in a marketing competition for a quite eccentric industry and took big data coding training. It may seem unrelated to marketing, but I appealed with how such experiences honed my talent and capacity as a marketer.
I was able to obtain various work experiences through the H-Experience program. Compared to my college classes, I especially learned how to think deeper, going a level or two deeper, and specifying things. I was also able to develop my communication skills as I participated in many meetings. My mentors were always caring and informative; I always considered myself a happy intern. I also came to have a role model here too. I wish to become a marketer who perfectly internalizes Hyundai Motors’ current and future directions and delivers maximized values to the customers. I’m very excited about the road ahead.
Became a member and broadened my horizons; Global Data Analysis Team intern Hongyeol Yang
Global Data Analysis Team intern Hongyeol Yang
Global Data Analysis Team analyzes regionally collected data in partnership with numerous Hyundai·Kia Motors foreign corporate bodies and based on the result, helps making business decision. I assisted data analysis work for automobile marketing here and also carried out my personal intern assignments as well. When I arrived at work, I checked my email and talked with my mentor for an hour. We talked about various topics during this time, including work and office life among other things. In the afternoon, I took part in numerous team project meetings and tried to understand the field work.
I majored in statistics in college and went on to graduate school to do my master’s in Data Science and Analytics. Statistics and data analysis felt so right for me, and I only thought about that specific path for my career. At first, I was going to get a job right after completing my master’s, but it was difficult to choose which company to apply for. So, I thought I would get a corporate experience through the internship. That’s why I applied for H-Experience upon graduation.
As I was preparing for the H-Experience screening, I did a focus study on the seniors’ work interview which was about an hour long. They were videos on the 2018 H-recruitment work TALK and a similar one made in 2017. In these videos, I got great information on the work I would do as well as flexible working hours, autonomous dress code, company dinner culture, etc., and got to find out a lot about the changing Hyundai Motors’ corporate culture.
Intern Hongyeol Yang broadened his horizons though H-Experience.
Many job applicants are not 100% sure about the work they would do as they do not have sufficient information on the work. The H-Experience program was very meaningful as I was able to find out how my experience and knowledge would be useful in actual workplace in detail.
I looked back on what I had learned from an academic perspective before my H-Experience, but now I realize that all sorts of knowledge can be a great background for corporate business. I also learned the importance of wide perspective and having great taste. I wish to broaden my horizons further, become a solid member of Global data analysis team and become a data scientist who can promote Hyundai Motors around the world.
These days internship programs are simply regarded as a gateway to land a job. But after listening to the three lively retrospects of their H-Experience programs, we could definitely see that the core of H-Experience is about ‘experience and training’. Hyundai Motors has reorganized its employment system and is now recruiting work-based talent. The future competitiveness of Hyundai Motors is more anticipated than ever.
