Ulsan is becoming greener than ever. It is the first city to have operated hydrogen powered city bus in Korea and is the home of Hyundai Motor Company factory, heart of the hydrogen powered car production. There’s also Korea’s biggest hydrogen fuel cell demonstration center which allows active research in hydrogen industry. There are also a number of hydrogen powered cars. Currently hydrogen powered cars registered in Ulsan is 361, which is no. 1 in Korea in per capita quantity. Ulsan city announced its plans to distribute 1,000 hydrogen powered car ‘NEXO’ by the end of this year and reach 67,000 by 2030. The city’s efforts to reduce environment pollution must have paid off, because it is so easy to find great nature friendly places in Ulsan city.

This is the hottest greenhouse landscape cafe in Ulsan these days, Onsilrium. The name comes from ’Onsil (Greenhouse)’, which represents warmth and green, and ‘-rium’, which means a place of exhibition. The very considerate owner wants all visitors to be surrounded by nature and experience the pleasant nature and comfort plants give off. There are many tropical trees including Washington Palm Trees and various cacti as well as Jeju Hackberry, Jeju island’s wild plant, domestic aged trees such as three-lobe crabapple and Jeju Weyrich's Azalea, pampas which you see in European gardens, and other grasses, here.

Onsilrium is consisted of 3 floors. There is the greenhouse on the first floor of the cafe, which allows visitors to admire flowers and trees all seasons. There are tables inside the greenhouse where you can have tea and dessert while enjoying the greenery. You will feel as if you are on your vacation as there are many exotic plants surrounding you. There is also an outdoor garden, so take plenty of time to slowly look around the cafe and absorb all that green energy.

Ulsan Theme Botanic Gardens & Arboretum was created based on the farm with 20-year history. There are pine trees, maple trees, roses, morning glories, peony, and many other flowers and trees for you to appreciate. In summer, there are Russian iris, water lily, hydrangea, morning glories, bellflowers, etc. How about a visit to take a look around summer flowers? The thick pine forest red clay trekking hiking course is also great for a refreshing forest bath.

Ulsan Theme Botanic Gardens & Arboretum is a great place to visit with kids as there are not only plant experiences but various activities planned for the family. A parrot will greet you ‘hello’ at the reptile experience center where you will also be able to observe birds and turtles, etc. Next to the center, there are petroglyphs waterfall pool and children’s playground. You can also try out topiary (cutting plants in many animal shapes to create artwork), natural soap making class, etc. Until early July, there is the bo tree fruit picking event all around the botanical garden, so don’t miss this opportunity. Plant cafe Cozynook is both a flower store and a cafe. To Ulsan people, it’s already famous for being a beautiful plant cafe. Upon entrance you will find lovely flowers and green plants.(you can pick out a favorite and make a purchase) Go in further and you will find the cafe. The exterior terrace allows dogs to visit, so you are able to spend quality time with your pet here.

Ulsan Grand Park is also a great place to experience the nature. It’s especially a great place for families as there are many experience events for the kids such as Kids’ Theme Park, Insect Experience Class, etc. At the Eco Travel Center, you are not only exposed to various plants but can observe 800 butterflies of 6 species including tiger swallowtail butterfly, cabbage butterfly, etc. as well as reptiles you can’t see in cities such as green iguana, stag beetle, etc.

There are many places where you can enjoy greenery in Ulsan Grand Park aside from the Eco Travel Center. You will be able to meet tropical plants and wildflowers in Nature Training Center nearby the carp water facility. Nammun Square has a four seasons flower garden that allows you to admire flowers all four seasons. We recommend the Metasequoia road and the red clay stroll road for a slow walk.
