The age of personalization technology is dawning
Every technology in the world is developed with people in mind. Technology has continuously evolved to make things safer, more convenient and to create greater prosperity over time. Today, technologies have begun to evolve; designed now not for just anyone but specifically the individuals who will use them. Our machines have begun to understand the people who are using the machine and to tailor what is offered so that users can use the exact service that is wanted. The age of personalization technology is dawning
Personalization Technology
"Personalization" has become a new buzzword and is found everywhere including in personalized services, marketing, profile, finance and contents. Calendars which used to sit on your desk moved firstly into your computer and now into the smartphone in your hands. Things change. Personalization has become the new trend.
In South Korea, the national anthem used to be played at 6 PM every day and male high school students were prohibited from growing their hair. Today these things are unimaginable! Smartphones have accelerated the trend towards personalization in the past 10 years. Personalization is not limited to smartphones. During the keynote speech at CES 2016, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich predicted that technologies will evolve to become "Ultra-personal". His prediction is holding true in all areas of technology including smartphones. In 1996, Amazon created a review system which allowed customers to review and rate books. The review data was processed by a system called "Bookmatch" which then recommended books for its customers. This was a key competitive edge for Amazon. As more and more people value experience over product, personalization technology has become a requirement for success.
Personalization technologies can be classified into four categories: technology that uses biometric information to protect the user's rights or improve health and safety, technology that positively affects a user’s emotional state, technology that provide the optimal service according to the user’s preferences by learning the user’s intentions and inclinations, and lastly technology that can be customized to your liking. Technology is evolving to be just right for every user so every individual user can enjoy the most benefits.
Bio Tech, The Most Reliable Identification Tool
Technology that uses biometric information to enhance personal security, health and safety in real time
Biometric information is one of the most accurate tools for identification. This is why biometric information such as fingerprints, iris recognition and facial recognition are rapidly gaining popularity in security technology; replacing metal keys and passwords. Biometric information is also a great tool for safety as well. For example, the driver assistance system can intervene if the sensors detect a sudden change in heartbeat or change to the iris. This is why HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP is developing various technologies based on biometric information and here are some examples. The first biometric information technology was applied on the R.E.A.D system introduced by Kia Motors at CES 2019. An electrode ECG sensor on the steering wheel captures biometric information, including heart rate and skin conductivity. Based on driver data accumulated using AI machine learning, the car actively controls various subsystems of the car such as audio, air conditioning, lighting, and steering, and supports the creation of a space optimized for the best possible living conditions.
So far, the focus has been made on developing safety technologies which can intervene in response to a lack of driver attention or to a health condition. HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP plans to develop more advanced technologies which will utilize biometric information to detect the moods and physical conditions of the driver and create the ideal cabin environment and provide other helpful services, to better serve the driver.
Emotion Tech, Your Experience from Your Mindset and Mood
Detect emotional state of user and activate features to improve comfort and safety
How you feel about an experience can vary greatly depending on many factors, especially your mindset and mood. Your mood alone can fundamentally alter how your experience is interpreted and remembered.
Suppose you do not feel like laughing when watching a really funny movie because you are not in the mood. This is why companies are developing technologies capable of detecting user’s moods and providing services that can have a positive impact. The advancement of AI and AI machine learning technologies are enabling these developments.
HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP is pioneering the development of a wide range of personalization technologies such as adjusting the level of ambient noise to maximize driver comfort while traveling in a car and a home lighting system which can change the color and warmth to improve the mood of those inside. Efforts are also being made to provide services optimized for vehicle safety, healthcare and entertainment based on technologies which can read the mood of users by analyzing facial expressions and muscle movement.
More advanced emotion detection technologies will be capable of much more than accurately assessing the mood of users and controlling the air conditioning, lights and music. For example, cars will detect driver fatigue by analyzing the driver’s facial expressions and will be able to autonomously take the car to a rest area when needed. Furthermore, cars will be able to guide drivers a scenic route if she or he is in a bad mood and to activate the air conditioner at home when the driver is approaching home on a hot day.
Tendency Tech, Understanding Your Motive before You
Provides tailored services based on analysis of user’s behavior patterns and habits
Some say that technology will someday take care of everything so that we won’t have to do a thing at all. Imagine a world where you are always taken care of, so you can enjoy maximum convenience all the time. It could feel like your birthday every day.
Technologies are moving towards making such a future a reality. HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP is already offering features that are activated automatically using data about drivers’ tendencies and preferences.
For example, both Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors unveiled a new Smart mode which has a new feature named "Smart Shift". Using the AI-based analysis of driving patterns, the car shifts driving mode between Eco, Comfort and Sport.
Big data technology can collect a much more diverse range of information to more accurately predict drivers’ tendencies. In other words, cars can study the driver, houses can study the people inside, and credit cards can study consumption patterns and together make helpful suggestions to the users.
If you love coffee, like to wake up early at weekends and go out and enjoy sports in the morning, the house can turn on the coffee maker, open up the curtains and set the car navigation to the gym in the morning. This is HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP’s vision.
Taste Tech, Doing the Things You Want Your Way
Offers features in many different forms to suit user’s personal taste
The age of technology built for every user is coming to an end. Instead, the age of customization, which allows users to choose their own set of services, is dawning. In the past, customization was about putting a digital costume onto game characters. Now it is about customizing their cars with the services they want. HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP is developing a wide range of customization technologies which allow drivers to access the services they want, moving beyond merely adjusting the engine, transmission and handling preferences.
Hyundai Card has an innovative feature named "Lock & Limit". The Hyundai Card holders can limit functions such as overseas purchases or set a credit limit with ease, a feature that was not technologically possible in the past. Hyundai and Kia are trying to apply the same principle to their cars to customize their cars to each driver’s liking. For example, we are developing technologies which will allow drivers to change their EV performance setting and mobile phone-based EV tune-up technology which automatically sets the performance setting to drivers’ liking even when they are using shared cars.
One way in which HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP may realize features people have previously only dreamt of, is by adding or removing seats for space, changing a vehicle type from sedan to wagon with a touch of a button and increasing the ground clearance height of a hatchback car on rough roads.
