Here are ways to experience the new Jeju for newlyweds who are going on Jeju honeymoons.
Have you ever seen your parents’ honeymoon photos in front of rape blossoms and Dolhareubang? When international travels were not as universal as now, Jeju Island was the go-to honeymoon place for our parents’ generation. In the mid-80s, there were even ‘honeymoon trains’ that operated between Gyeongju, Bugok and Jeju Island every weekend. And this very Jeju Island is being super favored by the newlyweds these days. As international travels became difficult recently, people are seeking out the most exotic sight in Korea, which is Jeju. And they are looking for means to travel the familiar Jeju Island in a special way. Here’s the lowdown on Jeju in new light, to help out the newlyweds.
A Picnic-like Casual Outing to Jeju Oreum
Jeju Andol Oreum with the impressive fire tree forest
The first thing we recommend to the Jeju honeymooners is Oreum. There are 368 Oreums in Jeju altogether. Even if you have frequented Jeju, it will be quite difficult to go through all of them. Some may think ‘it won’t be so nice for the tired newlyweds to go up the Oreum right after the big day,’ but there are places among Oreums where you can visit for a casual walk. There are even those that can be enjoyed without climbing at all. Oreums are also well-known to provide the once-in-a-lifetime backdrop, so make sure you take lots of photos!
The first Oreum we recommend is ‘Andol Oreum.’ Located in Songdang-ri, Gujwa-eup, this particular Oreum is known for the fire tree forest around the entrance. You can stroll around the well-organized path and soak in the fire tree phytoncide; there are many people who visit the Andol Oreum for the gorgeous rape blossoms field photo place. It’s recommended for newlyweds who don’t feel quite comfortable even with the gentle slope Oreums. The fire tree forest is privately owned; please note that you will be charged an entrance fee which will be used for maintenance of the place, as the number of visitors has been increasing lately.
Jeju Abu Oreum, loved for its unique topography (photography source. VISIT JEJU Jeju Tourism Organization)
The second Oreum we recommend is ‘Abu Oreum.’ This Oreum is located inside the Gunyoung Farm in Songdang-ri, Gujwa-eup. It has a very gentle slope, and you will reach the top in only 5 minutes. The Abu Oreum is known for its unique topography among all Oreums; there are a round crater that resembles a wooden bowl on top and a round cedar forest inside it. You will get an exotic photography if you sit around the rim and take in the landscape of the opposite circumference in your camera. Recently, some visitors rent picnic sets from cafes nearby when they visit. Please check the weather as a picnic may not be possible on very windy days.
The Holy Grail of Craft Beers; Brewery Tour
The most Jeju-like craft beer out there; Jeju beer (photography source. Jeju beer homepage)
If you are into drinking, especially newlyweds who love craft beer, how about a brewery tour? There are two craft beer breweries in Jeju. You can check out the beer manufacturing process in person and learn about the ingredients, which will help you enjoy beer even more. Drinking the freshest beer from the pipes is also a great appeal of the brewery tour.
We will first take a look at the ‘Jeju Beer’ brewery, loved by many as a local Jeju beer. Here you can take a tour and find out how beer is made, what the difference between lager and ale is, etc., with a professional docent. You can smell the various raw beer ingredients and check out which flavor and scent of particular raw ingredients you have always liked and disliked. If you know what raw ingredients you prefer and dislike, chances of picking out a great type of craft beer among so many different kinds will be better. Don’t forget a cool glass of beer after the tour as your tour ticket includes a free drink.
Operation hours: Thu~Sun 12:30 ~ 19:30 (Mon~Wed closed)
Cost: 12,000 KRW
* Tour is operated through a reservation system.
Magpie brewery, which brought on the craft beer sensation in Korea (photography source. Magpie brewery homepage)
Next, we have the ‘Magpie brewery.’ Magpie brewery started out in Gyeongridan-gil, Itaewon, 2011 and created the craft beer sensation in Korea when we weren’t so familiar with the concept of craft beers. It’s been loved by many people ever since. From 2016, they have renovated an empty tangerine storage in Jeju and have been operating their brewery here. This place is special in that you can go inside the brewery in person and look through their facilities to make close and lively observation. They also sell food like pizza and chicken; you can enjoy the place even without the tour. If you can’t enjoy beer because you’re driving, go back to your hotel, leave your car there and head over to the Magpie Blue Bird in Tap-dong downtown. It’s directly managed by Magpie, and you can enjoy over 30 types of craft beers.
Operation hours: Weekends (Sat, Sun) 1pm, 2pm, 4pm, 5pm
Cost: 20,000 KRW
* Tour is operated through a reservation system.
Jeju Activities
The hottest Jeju water activity these days; paddleboard
If there’s one thing you can’t miss out when at a ‘vacation place with a beach’, it’s water activity. You can experience most activities we enjoy foreign vacation places here in Jeju. There are many tourists enjoying activities in beaches with shallow water like Pyoseon, Hamdeok or Woljeongri. Here are the most recognized activities of this summer.
The first one is ‘paddleboard.’ We know that everyone is crazy about surfing, but if it feels too difficult or scary, we suggest you go on paddleboard. Because you can sit or stand up on the paddleboard and move forward with a paddle, you don’t have to be a good swimmer for this experience. But you know lifejackets are a must, right? At first, it won’t be easy to stand up on a moving board, but with enough practice with an instructor before you go on it, you will be gliding through the waters in no time.
The feeling of reeling in fresh cuttlefish in season; cuttlefish fishing
The second water activity is ‘cuttlefish fishing.’ Every summer, you can see cuttlefish boats that dot the Jeju night waters; there are many places that carry out programs for tourists to experience the joy of catching cuttlefish in season on a boat. Fishing boats take off from Hyunsapogu, Doduhang Port, Hahyohang Port, etc. As cuttlefish fishing is carried out at night, you can avoid the scorching summer sun and enjoy the romantic summer night vibes. There’s no special skill to cuttlefish fishing; even if you don’t know a thing about fishing, just go for it. You can eat up the raw cuttlefish you caught on the spot. As a boat leaves a port before the sun sets completely, you will also be able to admire the beautiful sunset on your way to the cuttlefish fishing point.
