Here’s Hyundai Glovis company parenting club ’Kideuk Kideuk’, where the laughter of member fathers and their children never ceases
Any dad with children would have had this concern; ‘what do I do with my kid this coming weekend?’, ‘what games do my child like?’, ‘am I a good father to my kids?’ and so on. Hyundai Glovis’ dads got together to solve this problem, and founded ‘Kideuk Kideuk’, a solution to make dads and children laugh all the time. Three fathers from Hyundai Glovis’ company parenting club ‘Kideuk Kideuk’ are here to tell you about their stories.
Father to Chan-young who likes playing with his dad more than anything in the world, Manager Hong Seok-hwan
Hello, this is manager Hong Seok-hwan, a founding member of Kideuk Kideuk. I am father to the 6-year-old Chan-young, who likes playing with his dad and with Lego more than anything in the world. I feel great joy in the everyday pleasure of watching children come running at me after work and being with them. I founded Kideuk Kideuk with other great dads so that we can be better dads and enjoy the happiness that comes with it.
This is Team Leader Kim Wook-tae, father to Su-rin, an angel who has special powers to make her dad smile whenever.
I’m Team leader Kim Wook-tae, one of the core members of Kideuk Kideuk. I’m also father to the 6-year-old Su-rin, who has the never-tiring physique and a bright smile that makes her dad smile too. I am especially sensitive towards parenting Su-rin as she had been in the ICU when she was born for about a month. ‘As long as she’s okay, I am willing to do anything’; the desperation has kept me going. Now I spend each and every special, precious day with my bright and healthy Su-rin through Kideuk Kideuk.
Q. We are curious about how ‘Kideuk Kideuk (Giggle Giggle)’ got started. How did it happen?
‘Kideuk Kideuk’ refers to the sound of children’s laughter and a combined word of ‘KID KID’ + ‘Go Go’.
Manager Hong Seok-hwan (Hereafter ‘Hong’): In 2018, our CEO really suggested that we join company clubs to activate company communication, but as regular clubs met up on weekends, it wasn’t easy to join them as a father. I was also concerned about finding great places to hang out with my kid on weekends, and so I thought of creating a club where my coworker parents could hang out with their kids. Thus, I founded Kideuk Kideuk.
When we first started the club in November 2018, there were 22 of us; now there are 33 altogether. The name of the club was at first ‘where are you going mom and dad?’, but when we were brainstorming our official name, Senior Kim Yang-gu from the Vision Management Team came up with the sound of children’s laughter which can also be a combined word of ‘KID KID’ + ‘Go Go’, ‘Kideuk Kideuk’. It was a unanimous decision to go with this.
Q. What kind of activities take place during club meetings? Were there any memorable experiences and activities?
Kideuk Kideuk creates special memories with children once a month.
Hong: We have members taking turns once a month, setting the place and time to be with our children and do activities together. We sometimes go to the park, see children’s musical, do some activities or visit the kids cafe, wherever the member in charge decides best to visit at the time. One time we went to the Han River Park and enjoyed our leisurely afternoon under the warm sunshine. Seeing the kids play there made me realize what a great decision it was for me to join the club.
Manager Sun Dong-won (Hereafter ‘Sun’): In 2018, we all went to see a musical together, and back then Ye-eun was too young and was afraid of the dark - so we went out during the show. But in December 2019, when we went to see the Nutcracker musical, she enjoyed it until the end- which made me realize how much she grew up in just a year. Next challenge for us is the movies.
Q. What has changed since joining the club? What do you feel through the club activities? Do you feel you’ve grown as a father?
Kideuk Kideuk made the member dads into savvy veterans who no longer have to worry about ‘where do we take our kids this weekend?’.
Sun: It felt like my homework to figure out what to do every weekend with my kid, and I felt like I was failing because I just went to where I always went to. But through Kideuk Kideuk, it was really nice to share new play venues and experience various games and performances, etc.
Team leader Kim Wook-tae (Hereafter ‘Kim’): Since my kid is also very young, I was also restricted to my neighborhood, always worried about where to go. But since joining the club, members prepare the time we spend with our kids, taking turns, once a month, which is a huge relief. It’s also very rewarding as a dad to see how children get along together, communicate and experience rich feelings.
Q. Is there any advice you wish to give to rookie fathers with jobs?
We hope more companies and groups will have such clubs, not just Glovis.
Sun: I heard that my kid always bragged to her kindergarten teacher about how she spent a great weekend with her dad. After hearing about it, I promised myself I would spend every weekend with her, but when a weekend comes, I find myself wondering where to go, what to do. I worry a lot less about it since joining Kideuk Kideuk. I wish more of such clubs would be created not just in Glovis but in all other groups and companies so that many working parents will relieve themselves of parenting worries.
Kim: I once asked my kid, “when do you have most fun when spending time with me?”, and my kid said, “I just like spending time with you dad!”. I feel that children and fathers are like a tree growing together. What you do together matters, but what’s more important is spending more time with each other.
Kideuk Kideuk plays the biggest role in keeping the happiness of the families.
Hong: I’d like to suggest all Glovis employees with children to join Kideuk Kideuk. The club really helps you take the pressure off from worrying about how to play with your children and allows your lonely child to make great friends, while giving time off to your wife who spends all day taking care of the little ones. Normally your spouse doesn’t like the weekend company clubs, but Kideuk Kideuk is an exception. It plays the biggest role in keeping the happiness of the families.
